Dennis Schroder helped Germany to a 76-63 victory over Greece in the quarter-finals of the men’s Olympic basketball. The Brooklyn Nets guard finished with 13 points, a game-high eight assists and one steal. Schroder hit 5-of-12 shots, including 3-for-7 from deep.

Germany hardly resembled the well-oiled machine that went unbeaten in the preliminary stage. Greece showed up with more energy and physicality to surprise Die Mannschaft. The Giannis Antetokounmpo-led team looked more prepared and hungry to open the quarter-final showdown.

With Dennis Schroder running the team to open the second quarter, Gordon Herbert’s group bounced back. After facing a 10-point deficit early on, the Germans entered the halftime break tied with Greece at 36-36.

Gordon Herbert started Schroder in the second half and the Germans methodically grabbed the upper hand. Schroder got plenty of support from Franz Wagner, Johannes Thiemann and Isaac Bonga to end the third frame with a 59-52 advantage.

Germany's strategy to get the driver's seat was quite simple. Give Schroder the ball to dissect the defense and then look for Wagner to do damage. It worked as planned as the Germans had the momentum leading into the final frame.

Giannis Antetokounmpo tried to will the Greeks into the game but got little help. The two-time NBA MVP had seven points in the fourth period along with a handful of rebounds. Greece just couldn't get over the hump as Franz Wagner and Dennis Schroder teamed up to snuff out every run.

Dennis Schroder saved his best for last against Greece

Dennis Schroder had five points and two assists in the fourth quarter against Greece. What didn’t show on the box score was the way he ran the offense. Even when Germans couldn’t always hit their shots, the flow of their offense was solid.

Schroder’s 3-pointer with 1:54 remaining gave Germany a 72-57 lead that sealed the fate of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Co. Die Mannschaft played with poise down the stretch to fend off the Greeks. Schroder played a huge role in pushing his team to the semi-finals.

Germany will now face the winner of France and Canada in the other quarter-final match. The Germans blew by the French in pool play 85-71 but have not faced the Canadians in the Olympics. Any of these teams are expected to give Schroder and his teammates a tough night in the semi-finals.

Die Mannschaft won the 2023 FIBA World Cup against Serbia. They are one step closer to at least a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics after beating Greece.
