Magic Johnson indirectly took a dig at LeBron James recently. During an appearance on the "All The Smoke" podcast hosted by former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Johnson said he never sought to team up with Michael Jordan.

Johnson hinted that he preferred the competition instead of teaming up with co-stars. Here's what the former LA Lakers superstar said (via BossHogg):

"I wasn't a guy like that. I never wanted to play with nobody but my dudes... Even pickup games, I never tried to get all the named dudes. I like that underdog thing anyway... That was always my mindset.

He added:

"That's what makes sports special, everybody joining each other. Go make it happen, if you're the best."

LeBron James' fans took offense to what Magic Johnson said. The former is believed to be the first player to popularize forming superteams in the NBA. His decision to join the Miami Heat in 2010 free agency and team up with fellow draft mates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh cleared the path for many other top players to form superteams.

However, many fans believe Johnson's comments aren't viable due to many factors. The LA Lakers drafted the 5x NBA champion as the No. 1 pick in 1980. They already had a 5x MVP on the roster in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Lakers also added another #1 pick in James Worthy in 1982.

Fans used these facts to mock Magic Johnson for his comments on Twitter. Here are some notable reactions:

Magic Johnson's and LeBron James' career paths were entirely different due to several factors

LA was one of the most attractive destinations back then, so Magic Johnson certainly had a better chance of winning multiple championships with the team that drafted him than James, who started his career with the Cavaliers.

The LA Lakers assembled one of the best rosters of the 1980s. Apart from Johnson, Kareem, and Worthy, they also had players like Bob McAdoo, Jamaal Wilkes, Norm Nixon, and Michael Cooper to bolster their chances of winning. The West was also not as competitive back then.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers were on a five-year playoff drought when they drafted a 18-year-old LeBron James. He led them to the ninth spot in his first two seasons before turning them into perennial playoff contenders, helping them achieve homecourt seeding between 2005 and 20210.

He led them to a finals run in 2007, despite being the only All-Star on the team. During his first stint between 2003 and 2010, James only had two All-Star teammates.

The competition was on the rise when LeBron James came into the league. Winning championships without star depth in those circumstances was certainly tougher, forcing LeBron to form superteams.
