Anthony Davis' illness was a factor in the LA Lakers' loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. Davis played only eight minutes before leaving the game with flu-like symptoms. He finished with one point, three rebounds and two assists.
Davis' absence on the floor made it difficult for the Lakers to hang with the Cavs for the duration of the game. Reports confirmed that AD was dealing with a 101-degree fever.
Although he insisted on playing, his availability was short-lived. It quickly became apparent that he didn't have the energy to play through the sickness.
This isn't the first time Davis has battled through an illness in the NBA. Last season, he woke up feeling sick just hours before the Lakers' game against the New York Knicks on November 23, 2021. He was listed as questionable due to the sudden illness. But with LeBron James suspended, he felt like the team needed him more than ever.
The Lakers struggled out of the gate and didn't catch fire until the second half. However, their comeback attempt fell short. They lost 106-100 and fell to 9-10 on the season. Davis recorded 20 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes.
Weeks prior, Davis was battling a different illness. This resulted in him vomiting midway through the Lakers' game against the Charlotte Hornets on November 8, 2021. AD put up a monster performance, posting 32 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in their 126-123 OT win.
The Lakers are taking on the Toronto Raptors tonight at Scotiabank Arena. Unfortunately, they won't have their number one rim protector with them. Anthony Davis will be unavailable due to flu-like symptoms. LeBron James will be sidelined with an ankle injury.
Anthony Davis' illness has hindered his teams to victory
Davis' illnesses have impacted the Lakers' ability to stay consistent. It's not a good look for the team and the All-Star big man. This has happened far too often over the past couple of seasons. It has become a normal occurrence for the eight-time All-Star.
What's frustrating for the Lakers is that it's happening when they need him the most. During last night's game against the Cavs, many were expecting the Lakers to win. It was James' first game in Cleveland this season.
There's still no timetable for his return. But many fans are hopeful that it won't be a prolonged absence.
