Charles Barkley talks selling all but one piece of his memorabilia

Charles Barkley couldn't care less about the hardware from the awards he won throughout his career. For many players, awards and memorabilia mean the world to them. Whether it's a favorite jersey, an Olympic Medal, or one of the various regular-season trophies, many players understandably have a connection to memorabilia.

As a former NBA MVP, an All-Star Game MVP, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, and NBA 75 member, Barkley has plenty of hardware to show off. As it turns out, however, "Chuckster" has no intentions of holding on to any of it. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Barkley was set to auction everything off for charity.

After agreeing to keep one of his Olympic gold medals for his daughter, Barkley is now moving forward with his plans to auction everything for charity. During a recent episode of the "Dan Patrick Show", Barkley joked about why he would need to keep them, explaining:

"I'm selling all my memorabilia to be underprivileged houses in my hometown. I was supposed to do it before the pandemic because stuff like that don't matter to me. But my daughter, I asked her, what she wanted. She said 'I'll take one of the gold medals,' The rest of this crap I'm going to sell for underprivileged houses in my hometown.
"Dude all that stuff is just clutter to me Dan, everybody know I won MVP, everybody know I won gold medals. Dude let me tell you something, I'm 60 years old Dan, if people come to the house and I say 'hey let's go look at my MVP trophy and look at my gold medal,' Hey I'm the biggest damn loser in the world."

Charles Barkley: A philanthropist and a competitor

Throughout his career, and since retiring from the NBA, Charles Barkley has cemented himself as quite the philanthropist. While Barkley has always advocated for social justice thanks to the example set by players when he first got into the league, he's taken things to the next level.

Over the last 13 years, Barkley has donated one-million-dollars a year to charity because, as he sees it, he's been blessed. In a 2020 interview with CNN he reflected on his charitable work in his hometown and the donations he's made, saying:

"I just think what it's costing these kids to go to college today is a travesty in this country, and I know historically black colleges are struggling. I wanted to do something to help them, and I'm going to continue to help them,”

Surprisingly, Charles Barkley, despite being the fierce competitor that he is, never cared for the awards that came with being an NBA superstar. He recalled in his interview with Dan Patrick that even when he was playing in the NBA, he didn't exactly care about the hardware associated with his accolades.

In his mind, as an athlete, the focus is always on the next award. As a result, he would give his mom his awards to hold onto.

Now, all these years later, Charles Barkley is taking the plunge and selling everything for good.
