On Saturday, Ismael Romero and Puerto Rico took on Team USA in the final game of the Group Phase of the 2024 Paris Olympics. While the team had gone winless through their first two games leading up to Saturday's clash with Team USA, Romero had been one of Puerto Rico's biggest contributors on the glass.

In the first half of Saturday's Team USA-Puerto Rico clash, Romero was one of the Los Gallos players who logged the most minutes for coach Nelson Colon. In the first quarter, the team was able to jump out to an early lead, however, in the second, Team USA caught fire to secure a big halftime lead.

In the second half, Los Gallos struggled to bounce back, ultimately falling to Team USA 104-83.

Looking at Ismael Romero's previous performances with Puerto Rico leading up to Saturday's game

Prior to Saturday's game between Puerto Rico and the United States, Ismael Romero and Puerto Rico had to secure their Olympic berth by competing in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The team faced off with Mexico on Jul. 6, picking up a dominant 98-78 win where Romero logged 10 points and three rebounds, finishing the game with a +/- of 6. He and the team then played Lithuania on Jul. 7, picking up a 79-68 win to secure their spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the case of Ismael Romero, the big man logged two points and four rebounds while also recording a block over 18 minutes of play. With the win, Puerto Rico clinched an Olympic basketball berth; however, the team then struggled through their four international friendly games leading up to the Olympics.

The team first faced Greece on Jul. 16, losing a closely contested game 67-65 before then falling to Australia several days later on Jul. 19, despite a dominant performance from Romero, who logged 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Two days later, on Jul. 21, Ismael Romero and Puerto Rico competed against Canada, who finished third in last summer's FIBA World Cup. The game saw Los Gallos' woes continue as they fell 103-93 to a stacked Canadian team before then playing their final international friendly against Spain, which they lost 107-84.

Once the Olympics started, Puerto Rico was unable to snap their four-game losing streak, falling to South Sudan in their opening game of the Group Phase before then losing to Serbia on Jul. 31 despite a ten-point, five-rebound outing from Ismael Romero that also included two steals.

Following Ismael Romero Puerto Rico’s loss to Team USA on Saturday, the team is now eliminated from playoff contention.
