Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum has played lights out this season. If he keeps it up, it will be one of the greatest seasons in Celtics history.

Tatum and the Celtics faced the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. The Celtics won by a final score of 130-118 and improved to 33-12 on the season. It was also their seventh consecutive victory. They look ahead to a finals rematch against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.

Tatum was spectacular once again for the Celtics. The superstar forward finished with 51 points, nine rebounds and five assists while shooting 15-of-23 from the field.

With the performance, Tatum set a franchise record. He surpassed Larry Bird for the most 50-point games in Celtics history. Heading into the game, Tatum and Bird were in a two-way tie with four 50-point games. Isaiah Thomas and Sam Jones are tied for third with two each.

Tatum had this to say about his performance:

"It's been a while since I scored 50. ...So I needed that one"

The Boston Celtics have been one of the most dominant teams in the league. After winning 21 of their first 26 games, the Celtics hit a rough patch last month. From December 10-21, they had won just one out of six games. The Celtics were in the midst of a four-game losing streak before beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 121-109 on December 23.

Since then, the Celtics have started to dominate like they did earlier in the season. They have won 11 of their last 13 games and are starting to create some separation in the Eastern Conference standings. After their win against the Hornets, the Celtics are now 4.5 games up on the Brooklyn Nets for first place in the Eastern Conference.

With All-Star Jaylen Brown out of the lineup, Jayson Tatum has put the team on his back. He had averaged 31.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists in his previous 13 games. During that same stretch, Tatum shot 46.1% from the field and 31.7% from 3-point range. This was before his monster 51-point performance vs the Hornets.

Tatum came into Monday's contest averaging 30.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists this season. If he continues on this trajectory, he will set another Celtics record. He could become the first player in Celtics history to average 30+ points in a single season.
