Joe Vardon backs trading LeBron James to Cleveland Cavaliers: “I would rather win one more now”

With things looking bleak for the LA Lakers, the possibility of a LeBron James trade gets talked about more often. One insider recently brought up the idea of him returning to his former stomping grounds.

LeBron James began his career with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. After departing for the Miami Heat in 2010, he returned home four years later. He helped the franchise win their first NBA title in 2016. Now, some are clamoring for the 18-time All-Star to return to Cleveland one more time.

During an appearance on the "Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show," Joe Vardon of "The Athletic" spoke about the possibility of James returning to Cleveland. He explained why the Cavs should trade Evan Mobley to acquire LeBron James.

"I've become a firm believer in if you have a shot take it. I would rather win one more now and walk away from whatever Evan Mobley gives you."

The Cavaliers are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 27-17 record. The franchise selected Evan Mobley third overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. The sophomore big man is averaging 14.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks this season.

Does trading for LeBron James make sense for the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Evan Mobley is a player with great potential, but Joe Vardon makes a valid point. If a team has a shot at winning an NBA title, they should take it. Given all the different factors, you never know when another opportunity to contend will come.

After trading for Donovan Mitchell in the offseason, the Cleveland Cavaliers are a force to be reckoned with. Between their star-studded backcourt and countless depth pieces, they are a darkhorse team in the East. Adding James would make them legitimate title contenders.

Giving up on Mobley would sting, but LeBron James is exactly what the Cavaliers need. He can fill the void at the wing position and bring loads of playoff and championship experience. Also, given the talent on the roster, the Cavs won't have to play him heavy minutes during the regular season.

Above all else, a mega-deal like this would be a feel-good story. The prodigal son returning home once again to help his hometown secure an NBA title. There is no denying LeBron James wants to add another ring to his collection. The Cavaliers would give him a great opportunity to do so. Unfortunately, a move like this seems very unrealistic at the moment.
