Looking at Kevin Durant and Team USA’s play leading up to Wednesday’s game against South Sudan

Heading into the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kevin Durant and Team USA went undefeated through their five international friendly games despite some closely contested battles. In the case of Kevin Durant, the former MVP wound up missing all five of Team USA’s friendly games with a calf strain sustained leading up to training camp.

While Kawhi Leonard wound up being replaced on the Team USA roster given his injury history, coach Steve Kerr made it clear that Team USA had no plans to replace Kevin Durant on their roster despite the fact that the team was hoping he wouldbe able to play in one of Team USA’s games leading up to the Olympics.

Despite being a limited participant in practices in the weeks leading up to the Olympics, Durant got off to a hot start in the Olympics, leading all scorers in USA’s first game against Serbia. Over just 16 minutes played Kevin Durant logged 23 points on 8-9 from the field.

Although there had been concern about his ability to jump right into the swing of things after missing Team USA’s international friendlies, the former champ proved the doubters wrong.

With a big game against South Sudan on Wednesday, Durant and Team USA are now 2-0 in the Group Phase heading into their final game against Puerto Rico on Aug. 3.

From there, assuming the team qualifies for the playoffs, they will compete in their quarterfinal matchup on Aug. 6, before semifinal action picks up on Aug. 8. If Team USA makes it through the first two knockout rounds, they will then compete in the final day of play on Aug. 10 for bronze, silver, or Olympic gold.

Based on the lastest odds, Team USA remains heavy betting favorites to win it all after their first two Olympic wins.
