Klay Thompson reveals keeping a news article motivating him to win his 5th championship ring: “That would really cement us as a dynasty of the ages”

The Golden State Warriors were a surprise team to win their fourth NBA championship last season. Klay Thompson was one of the keys to that title. The shooting guard made a triumphant comeback after missing two-and-a-half seasons, averaging 20.4 points per game and shooting 38.5% from 3-point range in 32 games.

In a sit-down with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, he talked about his motivations for winning a fifth championship. He referenced a news article that mentions players who have won five or more championships.

"I would love to be remembered as a winner ... If we were to get (to five titles), I think that would really cement us as a dynasty of the ages," Thompson said.

Thompson is correct in that winning five NBA titles is a rare feat, and only few teams have done it with the same core. The 1990s Chicago Bulls, the 1980s Lakers and the 1960s Celtics are the only teams that can make this kind of claim. Tim Duncan was the only consistent member of the 2000s San Antonio Spurs that won five titles. The current Warriors team is the greatest in the modern NBA.

The core of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Thompson will have to be at the top of their gamesto win a fifth title. The team will also need help from up-and-coming players like Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga to get over the hump.

How long will Klay Thompson be a Warrior?

Klay Thompson has been a crucial part of the Warriors dynasty. As he gets older and the team changes, his future may come into question. Thompson is in his 12th NBA season and is under contract until the end of next season. This year, Klay is making $40.6 million and due $43.2 million next season.

Golden State is currently over the salary cap and is in the luxury tax and may want to take some money off the cap. The team has already committed $123 million to Jordan Poole over the next four years and $109 million to Andrew Wiggins over the same period. Poole currently backs up Thompson, but his contract is not that of a backup.

Will Thompson be willing to take a pay cut on his next deal? If not, could he end up in another uniform that may a premium for his services? He may take a lesser deal as Poole will eventually take his place in the starting lineup. This season Klay is 18.2 ppg and shooting 38.9% from 3-point range. For now, he is showing he still can play and hit big shots when the team needs him.
