Dan Hurley's No. 2-ranked UConn Huskies underperformed at the 2024 Maui Invitational, finishing last in the eight-team tournament. Afterward, LA Lakers fans continued delighting in the ex-Lakers coaching candidate's misery.
The Huskies unexpectedly began the Maui Invitational with consecutive last-second Monday and Tuesday losses to unranked opponents (Memphis and Colorado). Hurley took exception to both contests' officiating, with LA fans on X/Twitter tearing into him for his short temper.
In June, the Lakers reportedly offered the reigning back-to-back NCAA national championship coach a six-year, $70 million deal. However, Hurley declined the offer and signed a six-year, $50 million contract to remain with UConn a month later.

Given their latest reactions to Hurley's shortcomings, LA fans still appear bitter about his decision. On Wednesday, the Huskies fell 85-67 to the Dayton Flyers in the Maui Invitational's seventh-place game, with Hurley appearing emotional on the sideline.
A day later, @GuruLakers on X shared the clip and celebrated the veteran coach's disheartenment.
"Life is AMAZING!!! #HurleyPack," @GuruLakers said.
Afterward, more Lakers fans piled on Hurley.
"I'd weep too if I was as cowardly and manipulative as I was bald," @ohnothevoid wrote.
"Sucks to suck Hurley," @Tony__Thai said.
F**k Dan Hurley. Happy Thanksgiving," @bertlal wrote.
"I am so grateful for this," @MambaBlanco said.
Meanwhile, others expressed relief that LA ended up with rookie coach JJ Redick.
"This is such a W for the Lakers. JJ is already the perfect fit," @i2gotgame wrote.
"Well, I'm glad Laker Nation picked JJ!!!" @BoltupLuke89 said.
Lakers get back on track as Dan Hurley's Huskies drop third consecutive game
While Dan Hurley's Huskies (4-3) lost their third straight game on Wednesday, LA ended its three-game skid. JJ Redick and Co. secured a 119-101 road win over the San Antonio Spurs, improving to 11-7.
The Lakers have struggled on the defensive end, ranking 26th in defensive rating (117.5). However, their offense has been elite. They sit fourth in offensive rating (116.3) amid Redick's emphasis on ball movement and quality shot selection.
So, while it's still early, LA appears to have rebounded adequately after missing out on Hurley.
