The launch of the NBA's city edition jerseys has been a highly anticipated event among fans over recent seasons. The NBA is more than just a sporting tournament and serves as part of the vibrant culture associated with their home for most NBA franchises. While cities paying tribute to their sporting franchises is part and parcel of life, there aren't many ways the teams get to display their love for the cities that they call home.

This is where NBA City edition jerseys enter the cultural fabric. And while they did catch the eye, the need to generate one every year has diluted the emotion. To a point now that they feel almost forced and unimaginative.

With all teams releasing their City edition jerseys for 2023-24, it appears that there is a general consensus against the concept. The emotion is certainly appreciated, but eventually, design teams were bound to run out of ideas.

With most jerseys going the minimal way this time out, fans seem to be appalled by the apparent "lack of effort" in the design departments and have voiced their displeasure across NBA social media circles. Simplicity is certainly appreciated in today's cultural zeitgeist, but comparisons with a design made on 'Canva Lite' are probably a knock on the minimalist movement in NBA jersey design. Here are some fan reactions:

While the NBA seems to be on the lookout for dazzling stars to add flair to the league, the jersey department certainly seems to be on a downward spiral toward mediocrity. Or at least, NBA Twitter believes so.

The 2023-24 NBA City edition jerseys have been labeled the "worst set of jerseys in years" by fans too

The City edition jerseys have become an annual tradition only recently, but it appears that the fandom is done with them. Or at least, the current set of jerseys as part of the series.

There are certain jerseys that have achieved cult status over the years. The Warriors "Oakland Forever" jerseys, the Miami Heat "Vice" jerseys, and the Phoenix Suns "Valley" editions are some that instantly come to mind. However, despite their standing in culture and the attention they brought to the concept of city edition jerseys, Nike seems to have thrown the towel this year.

The fandom seems to be absolutely repulsed, with them even being identified as the single worst set of jerseys to hit the market in years. And to achieve this status, in a league that experimented with half sleeves, is a lowlight indeed.
