NBA analyst explains why LA Lakers are reluctant to part ways with draft picks despite LeBron James' subtle hints

LeBron James has dropped subtle hints at the LA Lakers to make sure he continues to compete for a championship. However, the Lakers are reluctant to part ways with their draft picks; an NBA analyst has explained the reason for that.

On a recent episode of "The Colin Cowherd Podcast" on The Volume, Cowherd discussed James' recent comments. He believes that "The King" wants the Lakers to trade their remaining draft picks to improve the team.

"LeBron will say things," Cowherd said. "What he's probably trying to do is force the Lakers' hand into giving up those draft picks and getting more help."

However, Colin Cowherd explained why the LA Lakers are reluctant to part ways with their draft picks. First, James does not like to play with young guys. And second, if the Lakers trade their picks, their future would be murky if James leaves.

"This is what LeBron does," Cowherd said. "He comes to a franchise, won't play with young guys. You have to give up your draft capital to get veteran players, get up at against the (salary) cap or over it. And when LeBron leaves, you're f'd.

"You're screwed. You're trapped, so the Lakers have seen that. It happened in Miami; it happened in Cleveland. They don't want to become the Heat or the Cavs although both are in better positions than the Lakers today."

The LA Lakers have two unprotected first-round picks in 2027 and 2029. They might not be valuable at first sight but are going to be in the future. If the Lakers trade those two picks, they will be without a foundation for their next generation once LeBron James leaves.

James signed a two-year extension with a player option for the 2024-25 season. Anthony Davis also has a contract until that season, and if he leaves with James, the Lakers will have a tough time rebuilding without draft picks.

At the age of 38, LeBron James continues to amaze by defying Father Time and putting in crazy performances for the LA Lakers. James is averaging 35.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.4 assists in his last four games.

However, the Lakers are just 4-4 in those games. James was clearly frustrated following their 112-98 loss to the Miami Heat on Dec. 28. He told reporters that he's still competing for championships.

"I'm a winner, and I want to win," James said. "And I want to win and give myself a chance to win and still compete for championships. That has always been my passion. ... Playing basketball at this level just to be playing basketball is not in my DNA. It's not in my DNA anymore."
