Story behind CJ McCollum's "I'm trying Jennifer" reply to a Golden State Warriors fan in 2019 that went viral: All you need to know

With the Golden State Warriors dominating the league and winning three championships in the span of four years, the topic of 'superteams' was all the rage. After the team had already won the 2014-15 NBA Finals, the team then lost their bid to go back-to-back in 2015-16. The team later enlisted the help of Kevin Durant, who joined the team for another title run.

During the 2016-17 NBA season and the 2017-18 NBA Season, Golden State looked nearly unstoppable. With the big three of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green to go along with Kevin Durant, the team had few weaknesses. Many began to question whether or not it was fair for a team that looked so dominant to add Kevin Durant to the mix.

The conversation about superteams was raised to CJ McCollum, who spoke about the issue at length on CCTV Sports. He explained that the Warriors assembled a team that contained some of the best players in NBA history. Although he didn't envision himself ever joining a team like that, a short quote emerged of McCollum's words that had been taken horribly out of context.

"I would never do anything of that nature. I think it's disgusting. I'm not built like those guys, I was raised different."

He addressed some of the out-of-context quotes on Twitter, writing:

"Y’all stay bringing up old stuff. Yall got me out here looking like a bitter ex. 1 of the best teams ever assembled W/ 2 players you could argue are top 15 greatest to lace them up. 4 hall of famers w/ another one on the way. I’m happy stop making me look like a scorn man sheesh"

CJ McCollum's comments drew the attention of a Golden State Warriors fan named Jennifer, who was quick to respond. The woman told CJ to "win a playoff game then talk" - something that prompted the now-viral response from McCollum.

The response quickly went viral before becoming somewhat of a pop culture thing. "I'm trying Jennifer," phrase was used nationwide, and prompted SportsCenter to bring Jennifer Williams on air prior to the Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trailblazers game. She recalled the situation, saying:

"I am a big Warriors fan, I've been a Warriors fan since the year they lost to the Clippers in the playoffs. I was absolutely enamored with the Splash Brothers so I feel protective over them and so after we won the championship last year."

She continued:

"I kept seeing reports that CJ was not happy with the way he felt the Warriors were stacked and then I heard the podcast with KD and then I was at work and I was scrolling on break..."

At this point in the segment, Jennifer was joined live on air by CJ McCollum himself, who left her completely stunned. The moment was one of the best of the year back in 2019, and spent a ludicrous amount of time making the rounds on Twitter.
