Victor Wembanyama Olympic stats (July 27): How did 7'4" French center fare against Brazil?

Victor Wembanyama had a spectacular rookie season in the NBA where he won the Rookie of the Year Award. He was impressive throughout the 2023-24 campaign, however, it did not reflect on the San Antonio Spurs' record. The team had one of its worst seasons in franchise history, finishing with a 22-60 slate.

The 20-year-old averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game in his first NBA season, and now looks to continue his strong play in the Paris Olympics representing his home country of France.

France faced Brazil in the group-stage match at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. Wembanyama put front a great showing of his abilities to help his team secure the win for the night. He scored 19 points, collected nine rebounds and provided two assists in France's 78-66 victory over the Brazilian National Team.

Nicolas Batum played a great supporting role Wemby and shared the burden of carrying the national team in the matchup. Batum also scored 19 points and collected five rebounds.

As for the Brazilian side, Leonardo Meindl kept tried to keep the hopes alive for the Brazilian fans. He scored 14 points, collected 5 rebounds and dished out a single assist, however, his efforts were not enough to get his team past the French team.

Victor Wembanyama displays great confidence en route to the Gold Medal

The French National Basketball team did not have a great run in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, ending the tournament in 18th place. However, Victor Wembanyama and Les Bleus are now focused on winning the gold medal for France.

In an interview on ESPN, Wembanyama was asked about his excitement level at the thought of playing against Team USA in the tournament and he had a confident response to it.

"I am excited to play against any good teams, but it is really about us you know. We tryna make it as far as we can you know to the Gold Medal," Wembanyama said.

France's next game will be against Japan on July 30.
