Giannis Antetokounmpo’s older but less popular brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, is currently on a 2-year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Thanasis started his career in 2008 and played for the Filathlitikos senior team in the Greek fourth division in 2010. Thanasis originally declared for the 2013 NBA draft along with his brother Giannis, but was 1 of 17 players who withdrew on the day of the withdrawal deadline.

He was finally selected in the 2014 NBA draft by the New York Knicks and played for them in the Summer League. However, Thanasis Antetokounmpo was then shipped to the Westchester Knicks in the NBA D-League. He ended up having to wait 2 years until he got to make his NBA debut for the New York Knicks, when he was signed to a 10-day contract.

After returning to Westchester, Thanasis Antetokounmpo has since had stints at Andorra and Panathinaikos, until he was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks in July 2019. His current deal was signed in August 2021 and is worth $3.6 million. He will earn more than $1.8 million this season and will be out of contract for next term.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo suspended after headbutt on Blake Griffin

Since making his move to the Milwaukee Bucks, Thanasis has become an NBA champion. He has received regular minutes off the bench this season, averaging 4.2 minutes across 33 appearances. However, he finds himself in the news for the wrong reasons this time around.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo has been suspended for one game without pay by the NBA for headbutting Boston Celtics forward Blake Griffin. The headbutt took place during a stoppage in play in a game that the Celtics won, 140-99. The incident occurred with 1:25 remaining in the fourth quarter of the game.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo was ejected from the game after the incident, which saw him receive a Flagrant Foul 2. The suspension means that he will miss the Bucks' game against the Philadelphia 76ers at Fiserv Forum. The Bucks are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference, but they will have to be at their best to win the East, especially against the Celtics and the 76ers.

Three teams have emerged as potential title contenders this season. The Celtics are within splitting distance of the Bucks, as things currently stand. Giannis Antetokounmpo had a poor night against the Celtics as Bobby Portis finished with a double-double off the bench. Among those in the starting lineup, apart from Giannis, only Khris Middleton scored in double-digits with 13 points.
