The Golden State Warriors will face the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday evening in both teams’ first game of the new NBA season. It is a new era for both the Western Conference franchises but in different ways.
The Dubs enter the season without their longtime franchise icon, Klay Thompson, while the Rip City are still figuring out the post-Damian Lillard era. This creates an interesting dynamic for both teams ahead of the season opener.
With coach Steve Kerr being awarded a new deal and backing, the pressure is on him and the Warriors to perform. On the other hand, Blazers coach Chauncey Billups will look to avoid a repeat of last season's worst in-conference finish (21-61) and maybe make a surprise push for the playoffs.
The Warriors are heavy favorites going into the game as they have the upper hand in recent matchups, winning nine out of the last 10 games against the Blazers. Last season, they swept the series 4-0.

The last time the Warriors lost to the Blazers was in February 2023, when Damian Lillard was still with Portland. Lillard led them to a 125-122 victory, scoring 33 points.

Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trail Blazers: Preview
Both teams had a busy offseason, making additions and sales to their rosters to give themselves the best chance of success in the 2024-25 season.
The Warriors will aim to improve despite losing one of their dynasty’s main men, Klay Thompson, to the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson is known as one of the most versatile and efficient shooters in the league, and his presence both on and off the court is nearly impossible to replace.
But the squad the Dubs have now is in a better position than at the start of the past two seasons. They have strengthened their roster, bringing in several veteran additions, including Kyle Anderson (free agent), Buddy Hield (via trade), De’Anthony Melton (free agent) and Lindy Waters III (via trade). They also selected Quinten Post with the No. 52 pick in the 2024 draft.
The Blazers have also bolstered their ranks, selecting big man Donovan Clingan as the seventh pick in the NBA draft. He joins a group of lottery picks on their team, including Scoot Henderson, Deandre Ayton, Deni Avdija and Shaedon Sharpe.
