Who's coaching Team USA in Paris? A look at the 2024 Olympic men's basketball coach

On Wednesday, Team USA announced its final 12-man roster for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. While its team vastly differs from its 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup roster, its coach remains the same. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr will reprise his role as the head of USA Basketball amid its quest to win another Olympic gold medal.

Kerr’s coaching success has waned recently, as Team USA failed to medal at last year's FIBA World Cup, finishing in fourth place. Additionally, the Warriors (46-36) failed to make this year's NBA playoffs, finishing 10th in the Western Conference.

Nonetheless, Kerr is broadly considered an all-time great basketball coach, boasting an elite coaching resume.

Before being appointed Team USA's head coach in 2021, the 58-year-old served as an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich from 2017 to 2021. As an assistant, he helped guide USA Basketball to the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

As for his NBA coaching accomplishments, Kerr has led Golden State to six NBA Finals appearances, winning four titles since taking over in 2014.

He coached the Warriors to an NBA-record 73 wins in the 2015-16 regular season. The following year, he guided the franchise to a historic 16-1 playoff record behind its Big 4 of Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Kerr's illustrious coaching tenure earned him the 2016 NBA Coach of the Year award. Furthermore, in 2022, he was named one of the NBA's 15 greatest coaches ever as part of the league's 75th anniversary celebration.

Thus, most would probably agree that Kerr is more than qualified to spearhead Team USA's Olympic gold medal pursuit this summer.

Steve Kerr expresses gratitude for chance to coach Team USA at Paris 2024 Olympics

Upon Team USA announcing its Paris 2024 Olympic roster, Steve Kerr expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach the star-studded group.

Per NBA.com, USA Basketball's 12-man roster has won a combined 10 Olympic gold medals and three FIBA World Cup titles. Meanwhile, all 12 players are NBA All-Stars, with four having won at least one MVP and six having won at least one NBA championship.

Thus, Kerr faces immense pressure to bring home the gold. However, according to the veteran coach, he is ready for the challenge.

“My staff and I are honored to coach this amazing group of players in our quest to win Olympic gold in Paris,” Kerr said. “We plan to represent USA Basketball with the utmost class and we hope to make our country proud.”
