Ja Morant will not play on Sunday night against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Memphis Grizzlies star point guard is out with a hip injury he sustained against the LA Lakers on Wednesday. Morant took a hard fall after Christian Koloko bumped him in mid-air.
The Grizzlies guard exited the game right after and didn't return. Morant also didn't play against the Washington Wizards on Friday. The two-time All-Star will miss his third game this season. Morant missed one game before the hip injury because of a thigh injury.
In eight games, Morant has averaged 20.6 points, 5.0 rebounds 9.1 assists and 0.6 steals, shooting 44.8%, including 25.8% from 3. He's had a relatively slow start offensively as he was still trying to find his rhythm after also missing time during the preseason with an ankle injury.
Morant returned this October after 10 months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury. He played nine games in 2023-24 after serving a 25-game suspension to begin the season.

Ja Morant could miss multiple weeks
The Grizzlies' injury bug has followed them into the 2024-25 season. They wound up in the lottery last year because of it. Memphis would have hoped for better luck with that this year, but it hasn't been the case. Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart have all suffered various injury setbacks.
Meanwhile, rising prospect GG Jackson is yet to make his season debut. Ja Morant has become a new addition, and they could be without him for multiple weeks. According to the Grizzlies, he didn't suffer any dislocation, but he was diagnosed with a hip subluxation and multiple Grade I pelvic muscle strains.
The Grizzlies took care of business against minnows Washington in Morant's absence and are expected to win against the Portland Trail Blazers, too.
However, they might struggle against stronger playoff-caliber opponents. Memphis isn't as deep as it was in previous seasons. Ja Morant's presence has made a ton of difference in the outcome of their games over the past three seasons.
