Kyrie Irving was a late scratch for Thursday's game between the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz. According to the Mavericks' injury update, Irving is out with a right shoulder sprain. The star guard wasn't on the injury report until Thursday afternoon. He was initially questionable before being downgraded to out in the evening.

The Mavericks haven't reported when Irving endured the injury. He has played all 11 games, averaging 25.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 54.5% shooting, including 54.1% from 3-point range and 85.7% from the free throw line.

The Mavericks will have to rely heavily on Luka Doncic and Klay Thompson this game with Irving sidelined. P.J. Washington will also miss the game with a right knee sprain.

Kyrie Irving's next chance to suit up for the Mavericks will be against the Spurs on Saturday.

Quentin Grimes gets the start in Kyrie Irving's place

Kyrie Irving will be replaced in the starting lineup against the Utah Jazz by Quentin Grimes. He has been solid in his limited minutes, averaging 13.7 minutes a game and shooting 36.8% from the 3-point range. Grimes has been an ideal 3-and-D fit on the team, especially in lineups with Irving and Luka Doncic, where the Mavericks can be exploited defensively.

Grimes is coming off his best outing in a Mavs jersey after logging 29 minutes in Tuesday's loss to the Warriors. He played 29 minutes, tallying six points and six rebounds, shooting 2-of-4 from range.

Meanwhile, Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall and Dereck Lively II will get extra opportunities than usual offensively to compensate for Irving's 25.2 ppg production.
