Patrick Ewing was fired by Georgetown on Thursday after six seasons as head coach. Ewing, a legendary figure at the university, had an overall record of 75-109 during his tenure. His final game for the Hoyas was a 80-48 blowout loss to Villanova in the first round of the Big East tournament.

University president John J. DeGiola made the announcement, calling Ewing the "heart of Georgetown basketball" in a statement. Ewing played four years for the Hoyas, reaching the NCAA championship game three times and winning one in 1984.

"Patrick Ewing is the heart of Georgetown basketball," DeGiola said. "I am deeply grateful to Coach Ewing for his vision, his determination and for all that he has enabled Georgetown to achieve. Over these past six years, he was tireless in his dedication to his team and the young men he coached and we will forever be grateful to Patrick for his courage and his leadership in our Georgetown community."

Despite Ewing's losing record as head coach of Georgetown, there were some highs during his tenure. He led the Hoyas to a 19-14 record in 2019 and made an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.

Ewing also led Georgetown to the Big East tournament championship in 2021. In his lone appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Ewing's Georgetown lost to the Colorado in the first round.

After 15 years as an assistant coach in the NBA, Ewing was hired to become Georgetown's head coach. However, he only led the Hoyas to the NCAA tournament once during his tenure. Nevertheless, Ewing remains a legend at Georgetown.

"I am very proud to be a graduate of Georgetown University," Ewing said in a statement. "And I am very grateful to President DeGiola for giving me the opportunity to achieve my ambition to be a head basketball coach. It is particularly meaningful to me to be in charge of the basketball program at my alma mater. I wish the program nothing but success. I will always be a Hoya."
