Player Of The Week : Andrew Bynum

For the third time in his career, Andrew Bynum has been declared ‘Player Of The Week’ for leading his team to a successful stretch of 4-0 in the absence of Kobe Bryant.

The wins include road wins against New Orleans Hornets, San Antonio Spurs and home wins against Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks.

April 9 @ New Orleans : Scored 19 points on 7 of 10 FG’s with 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

April 11 @ San Antonio Spurs : Scored 16 points with 30 rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a 98-84 win.

April 13 vs Denver Nuggets : Scored 30 points with eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks in a 103-97 win over the Nuggets.

April 15 vs Dallas Maverics : Scored 23 points, 16 rebounds and two dimes as the Lakers topped the Mavericks 112-108 in OT.

During the game against San Antonio Spurs he became the fifth Laker to score 30 or more rebounds in a single game. The other four players to do so – George Mikan, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – all Hall of Famers. It was also just the 20th time in franchise history that a Laker grabbed at least 30 rebounds.

Bynum’s performance slumped after the All-Star Game in which he was nominated for the first time in his career. He has himself to be blamed for the slump in his performance. Whether it be taking ill-advised 3 shots or not joining team parleys, Bynum was certainly in trouble on and off the field.

But his recent performances have allayed all fears and maintained my faith that Bynum is a mature player and his recent antics were just an aberration.

In the absence of Kobe Bryant, it is safe to say that Bynum has led the Lakers to 4-1 victory. After losing their first game against the Suns, Lakers made a strong comeback, Bynum taking the lead, and defeated playoff contenders San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks. Bynum’s performance was exceptional in these games. In those five games he averaged 22 ppg, 16.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. In a way it can be argued that he is the league’s best Centre – better than Dwight Howard.

Bynum’s last Western POW came for games played from March 12 to March 18, when he led the Lakers to a 3-1 week behind averages of 27.5 points and 14.8 rebounds while shooting 66.5 percent from the field.

His first career POW came for the week of 1/19/09 to 1/25/09, when he posted averages of 23.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.25 blocks in helping lead the Lakers to a 4-0 week.

I have always maintained that Bynum’s performance is a key to Lakers success this season. And if Bynum gives numbers like these regularly then Lakers will be the team to beat this season.
