The Golden State Warriors lost associate head coach Mike Brown to the Sacramento Kings in the offseason. They almost lost assistant head coach Kenny Atkinson to the Charlotte Hornets before he decided to stay with the Warriors. However, the latest rumors suggest that Atkinson could join the Atlanta Hawks.
The Hawks parted ways with head coach Nate McMillan on Tuesday, with Joe Prunty named as interim head coach. McMillan's tenure in Atlanta was contentious, especially his relationship with Hawks superstar Trae Young.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski noted that the Hawks are looking at three candidates, possibly this summer. They are Atkinson, former Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder and current Milwaukee Bucks associate head coach Charles Lee.
"Snyder has history as a Hawks assistant coach under Mike Budenholzer, as do two more candidates expected to be part of the process — Milwaukee Bucks associate head coach Charles Lee and Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson," Wojnarowski said.
Quin Snyder has been out of a job since the offseason, with the San Antonio Spurs rumored to be interested in him as the successor to Gregg Popovich. Meanwhile, Charles Lee was interviewed by the LA Lakers and Charlotte Hornets last season. Lee was promoted to associate head coach following Darvin Ham's departure.
Kenny Atkinson almost left the Golden State Warriors after agreeing to become the new head coach of the Hornets. However, he backed out in the end and decided to stay in Golden State. Charlotte moved on from him and brought back Steve Clifford.
"We're doing great here, doing great," Atkinson told NBC Sports Bay Area. "That really was the overwhelming factor. Living where we live, the kids in a great school district. It's pretty ideal."
Golden State Warriors could lose Draymond Green, Bob Myers this offseason
The Golden State Warriors could look different from a roster standpoint, as well as the front office, next season. Draymond Green's future with the defending champions has been in question since he punched Jordan Poole in the offseason.
Green could also opt out of his contract at the end of the season and become a free agent. He has already been linked to the LA Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons.
Meanwhile, Bob Myers is in the final year of his contract and could be out of a job after the season. Myers has been with the Warriors since 2011, building four championship teams in the process.
If Golden State fails to re-sign Myers to a new deal, other NBA teams could be interested in his services. The LA Clippers, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards are reportedly ready to give Myers a huge contract, as per Sam Amick, Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic.
