Stephen Curry passes father Dell Curry on NBA all-time career 3-pointers list

Stephen Curry poses with his father Dell Curry and the NBA Most Valuable Player trophy.

The 11-0 unbeaten franchise record start by the Golden State Warriors has been the talk of the league and Stephen Curry has been a huge reason behind it. On Saturday while playing the Brooklyn Nets, Curry broke a family record as he a family member on one of the NBA’s all-time charts. With his thrid three-pointer of the game in the third quarter, Stephen passed his father Dell Curry’s total of 1,245 career three pointers made.

Dell Curry. "I knew about it going into the game.”

Stephen now ranks 41st on the NBA’s all-time career three-pointers list, tied with recently retired forward Hedo Turkoglu.

As son surpasses father, the most significant and astonishing statistic is the number of games it took the duo. While Dell recorded his tally of three pointers in 1,083 games across a career spanning 16 seasons, Stephen did so in just 427 career games.

"It's a pretty special moment for my family,” Stephen said. “I'm sure he never dreamt of the day one of his sons would pass him.”

Courtesy his hot start, reigning the reigning NBA MVP has been on a record-breaking streak. His 40 points on opening night against the New Orleans Pelicans was the second most points scored by a reigning MVP on opening night since 1963-64; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had scored 41 points against the Phoenix Suns on October 13th, 1972.

Curry is on pace to reach 424 three pointers made at the end of the season, the current record is one he set last season with 286.

After 11 games, he averages 33.4 points and 5.6 assists on 51.7% shooting from the field, 45.2% from beyond the three-point line and 93% from the free throw line. In seven of the eleven games, he has recorded a 30+ point game including two 40+ points scores and a 53 point outing.

Some of Curry’s brilliant statistics:

He has now hit a three-pointer in 84-straight regular-season games, extending the NBA's third-longest three-point streak. He’s also the first Warrior since Rick Barry in 1974-75 to score at least 30 points in seven of the season's first 11 games.

Stephen Curry has scored at least 30 points in five of the season's first six games. The last NBA player to do so was legendary Laker Kobe Bryant in the 2009-10 season. He is off to a better start to this season than Jordan was with his record-setting 72-win with the Chicago Bulls.
