The 27th FIBA Asia Championship will be played from 1st to 11th August 2013 in Manila, Philippines. The tournament will begin with 15 teams divided into four groups (Group A, B, C and D) in the preliminary round. Team India has been placed in group D for this tournament and has Thailand and Kazakhstan as their other two opponents.
After their encounter against Bahrain, India will play Thailand on Friday Aug 2. In their last encounter in the preliminary round, India will face Kazakhstan on Aug 3rd. Three teams from each group will qualify for the second round of the tournament. The top three teams from the tournament will qualify for the 2016 Olympics to be held in Lagos, Nigeria*.
National Men’s Team Head Coach, Scott Flemming will be leading the Indian contingent for his first Championship with the team along with 2nd year Assistant Jora Singh and 1st year Assistant G.R.L. Prasad. India has made 22 appearances so far in the FIBA Asian Championship with their first appearance in 1965 and has been placed 4th twice in 1965 and 1975.
*Note: There appears to be a mistake in the release however. As the top three teams from the 2013 FIBA Asia tournament will qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup to be held in Spain and not the 2016 Olympics. Besides, the 2016 Olympics will be held in Rio, Brazil and not Lagos, Nigeria, as has been stated in the release.
