The San Antonio Spurs are getting ready to celebrate the organization's 50th anniversary on January 13 when the team take on the Golden State Warriors. In honor of the team's 50th anniversary, the game will be played at the 65,000-capacity Alamodome.

According to the team, they are currently just 5,000 tickets shy of breaking the NBA's all-time attendance record. With 8,000 seats still up for grabs, it sounds as though the team could very well wind up nearing the attendance record.

In honor of their quest to topple the current record holders, we're taking a step into the past and looking at the 5 most-attended games in NBA history.

#5 - Atlanta Hawks vs. Detroit Pistons (47,692)

Back in 1988, the Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons squared off in a highly anticipated matchup in the Motor City. At the time, the Pistons were getting ready to win two straight championships, and fans were beginning to take notice.

During a regular season game against the Hawks on March 30th, 47,692 fans watched on as the team lost at the Pontiac Silverdome 103-102. Although they didn't get the job done, their loyal fans earned them a spot on our list.

#4 - Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets (49,551)

After the 1989 expansion saw the Minnesota Timberwolves enter the league, fans in the twin cities were excited to say the least. The team's first season they led the league in attendance despite ultimately finishing 6th in the Midwest Division with a 22-60 record.

During a home game at the Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome on April 17th, 49,551 fans watched on as the team lost by 10 points.

#3 - Philadelphia 76ers vs. Detroit Pistons (52,745)

It's hard to understate the popularity of Isiah Thomas and the Detroit Pistons during the 80s and 90s. The Pistons had yet to really taste success, however, fans were beginning to take note of the team's talent.

During a regular season game with the Philadelphia 76ers at the Pontiac Silverdome on February 14th 1987, 52,745 fans watched on as the team picked up a win.

#2 - Detroit Pistons vs. Boston Celtics (61,983)

Another game where the Detroit Pistons fans showed just how passionate they are about their team. Shortly after the start of the new year in 1988, 61,983 fans headed to the Pontiac Silverdome to watch Isiah Thomas and Larry Bird go head-to-head.

Bird and the Celtics had just won a championship two seasons earlier, but it was Thomas and the Pistons who picked up the win in the Motor City.

#1 - Chicago Bulls vs. Atlanta Hawks (62,046)

62,046 fans flocked to the Georgia Dome to watch the Atlanta Hawks take on the visiting Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls back in March of 1998. Jordan and the Bulls were in the midst of a historic championship run, and left the Hawks in the dust as they blew theM out by 15 in front of their home fans.

To date, the game remains the most attended in NBA history.
