Earlier this week, the Indiana Pacers provided a Tyrese Haliburton injury update. The third-year guard is progressing in his rehab, but it remains unclear when he will take the floor again.
Tyrese Haliburton's injury occurred two weeks ago in a six-point loss to the New York Knicks. He fell during the game and suffered a knee and elbow injury. He's missed eight games now, and Indiana is 1-7 in that span.
Before getting injured, Haliburton was on his way to landing his first All-Star nomination. So far this season, he has been averaging 20.2 points and 10.2 assists per game, while shooting close to 40% from beyond the arc.
Recently, Tony East of SI.com provided more information on Haliburton's rehab from injury:
"He will miss at least a few more games for Indiana... Even though his return isn't imminent, Haliburton is progressing well in his rehab. He is already moving around with ease and began running again late last week. At Pacers practice on Monday, he could be seen getting up 3-point jump shots."
The Pacers currently sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 24-26.
Tyrese Haliburton injury could change the Indiana Pacers' plans
Before the Tyrese Haliburton injury, the Indiana Pacers looked like they might have had a shot at the playoffs. As the breakout star continues to miss time, their chances are slowly decreasing.
At this point in time, the Pacers should not be rushing Haliburton back. He is the franchise's new star, and they need to proceed with caution. That being said, this setback could alter some of their plans in the short term.
With the playoffs getting out of reach, the Pacers could become a seller before the Feb. 9 trade deadline. They have veterans like Myles Turner and Buddy Hield on the roster who could get them a solid return.
The Pacers' core is currently loaded with bright young talent. Even though they started off the year hot, development should still be the main focus for them. That being said, moving the veterans could open up more playing time for the young prospects.
Based on the recent update, it seems like Haliburton still has some time to go before he can get back on the court. While they could make a push after his return, it might be best for the front office to mail this season in. They can stockpile more assets at the trade deadline and then commit to development for the rest of the year.
