Chris Ford's playing and coaching career in the NBA

Chris Ford played in the NBA for a decade, starting with the Detroit Pistons, who selected him in the second round of the 1972 draft. After the 1978 season, he joined the Celtics, where he won an NBA championship in 1981.

Ford signed a multi-year contract with the Pistons when he was drafted before then re-signing with the team in 1976. After his playing career, Ford immediately transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics for seven seasons before then being appointed head coach of the team.

Following a five-year stint as head coach of the Celtics, Ford bounced around the league, coaching several NBA teams before transitioning to the collegiate level. After a two-year stint as a coach for Brandeis University, he was back on the sidelines for the Philadelphia 76ers.

He coached for a year as an assistant before serving as the interim coach in 2003-04 when the team fired Randy Ayers halfway through the season. Chris Ford took over for the rest of the season before stepping away from coaching duties.

Between the two contracts as a player and twenty years of experience as both an assistant and a head coach, Ford earned quite a bit of money. Despite walking away from coaching after the 2003-04 season, Ford still served as a scout for the 76ers, and as a consultant for the New York Knicks.
