When Charles Barkley regretted dumping his first college love over new fling: “I probably should have stuck with Amy”

Charles Barkley is someone who can always find a way to make someone laugh. Whether it's him messing around on the TNT show or just having a good time, Barkley is widely regarded as one of the funniest people on television.

Rightfully so, Barkley deserves that type of honor as he's also a good person.

He likes to crack jokes but sometimes other players don't like that. However, he undoubtedly has a soft and funny side to him, too. He spoke in an interview about how he lost his first girlfriend back in his glory days. As expected, the interaction was absolutely hilarious.

Ernie Johnson decided to surprise Barkley with his former high school girlfriend, allowing Amy Shorter to hop on the show:

“I would say this person was very influential in your life,” Johnson explained to Chuck. “As you went from Leeds, Alabama to the NBA … your first date in high school, Amy Shorter, is on The Steam Room!“

Amy Shorter then talked about how she and Barkley went to prom together and it was a great time. This isn't the funny part just yet, however. Barkley then responded in a hilarious way, considering he's now married.

“It was fun. We had a good time. He keeps you laughing,” Shorter explained when asked about her prom experience with “Wade,” Charles’ middle name that he went by up until college. “One thing I can always say about Wade [is] he never changed. His fame and fortune never changed him. He’s still the same all the time, and that’s what I love about him. He’s just Wade.”

As we can see from the exchange, "Wade" was a fun guy even back then.

Barkley spoke about how he shouldn't have left Shorter and how the fame got to him back then. Barkley wasn't the most hyped up NBA prospect in the world, but people knew he had a chance to be special and that got to his head.

“Truth of the matter is I probably should have stuck with Amy,” Barkley said. “There was this one girl at our high school. She was the homecoming queen and every guy wanted her at our high school. And what people don’t remember … I was not recruited because I was 5-foot-10. And I grew from 5-10 to 6-5 in one year. So I went from being a nobody to somebody.”

“Amy was actually with me when I wasn’t popular, which is why I should’ve stuck with her,” Barkley candidly explained. “But then when I became popular, this one girl started paying me attention. And that was a mistake on my part.”

Charles Barkley is currently married to Maureen Blumhardt. The couple has been married since 1989, according to most sources. While Barkley is certainly an outgoing person, the couple is actually somewhat private. They have one child, Christina Barkley.

Perhaps when Charles Barkley is done with his playing career, he and his wife will start to be more outgoing to the public.
