Former 17-year NBA veteran Mike Miller was considered to be one of the best sharpshooters in the league throughout his career. However, the two-time NBA champion has also had an interesting journey post-retirement.

Miller first transitioned to coaching in 2018, where he spent time as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis. He coached under former four-time NBA All-Star guard Penny Hardaway.

During his time with Memphis, Miller earned a reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters. However, he only spent two seasons with the school before transitioning to being a high school basketball coach.

In 2020, Miller was named the boys basketball head coach at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee. He chose the school as it was the high school his sons Mason and Mavrick were attending. This provided him with an opportunity to spend more time with his family.

“It allowed me to see how much I was missing,” Miller said.
“Because I actually had to stay at home and I got to be around (my family). I turned around and saw I had a senior in high school and a sophomore in high school.”

Miller proceeded to lead Houston to its first state title in his first and only season with the school. The team defeated Cane Ridge 62-43 to win the TSSAA Class AAA state championship. Overall, the Mustangs finished with a 21-3 record with Miller as coach.

“I was able to sacrifice a little bit of what I wanted to do in my personal life to do this, and it was worth every minute of it,” Miller said.

Following his success with Houston, Mike Miller stepped away from coaching in 2021 to pursue a different career path.

Where is Mike Miller now?

Following his brief coaching career, Mike Miller has transitioned into becoming a basketball agent for LIFT Sports Management. He founded the company alongside Donnie McGrath, a former Providence College basketball player, who is the company’s CEO.

In addition to being an agent, Miller is also the president of the company.

LIFT Sports Management reportedly represents eight NBA players and has around 25 total clients, including pro and college athletes. Their clients include Orlando Magic star rookie Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 pick from the 2022 NBA Draft.

“Other agencies might know a lot about basketball but to live it and to understand it — and I think at the end of the day, again, nothing against them, but me talking and projecting out a player or comping a player or doing those things as far as what it looks like for a player paints a little bit of a different picture,” Miller said.
“Because I know what it looks like to play against or play besides LeBron James or play beside a Marc Gasol or a Pau Gasol, what a team really, really wants you to do.
“It may not be who you are as a rookie. It may not be who you are in four years, but how do I get on the floor now? What do they expect you to do? And it’s gonna look different.
“Having those conversations — again, other agencies can have them does the client believe you? Does the front office believe you? Those things all come into the actual fact that I played. My entire life was the game of basketball.”
