Which US state has the most NBA players? All you need to know

LeBron James and Steph Curry are both born in the US state of Ohio.

There are currently 499 players in the NBA, including those signed on two-way contracts. The United States still produces the highest number of players in the league despite the individual dominance of international players over the past few years.

But which US state has the most players? Sportskeeda dove into the current roster of all 30 teams and looked at where each player was born.

California has produced the highest number of current NBA players with 43. The state has not just produced players, but superstars. California boasts players such as James Harden, Damian Lillard, Klay Thompson, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard and Russell Westbrook.

Harden and Westbrook are former MVPs, while Thompson and Leonard have six championships between them. Lillard and George are perennial All-Stars, and are considered franchise players.

All-Stars like Kevin Love, DeMar DeRozan, Jarrett Allen, Jrue Holiday, Brook Lopez and LaMelo Ball were born in "The Golden State." Young stars that include Evan Mobley and Jalen Green also hail from California.

Which other US states produce a lot of NBA players?

The US state that has produced the second-most players this season is New York with 27. Donovan Mitchell, who the Knicks failed to acquire in the offseason, headlines the crop of talent from "The Garden State."

Texas comes in at number three with 24 current players. Jimmy Butler and Trae Young are the best players from "The Lone Star State." Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons also hails from Texas.

North Carolina has the fourth-most players with 23. Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors grew up in "The Tar Heel State," but was born in Ohio like LeBron James. Even if North Carolina cannot claim Curry, they still have other star players like John Wall, Brandon Ingram and Chris Paul.

The state of Illinois rounds out the top five with 19 current players. Derrick Rose and Anthony Davis are both from Chicago.


Which US states don't have any current players?

There are eight US states currently without an NBA player on active rosters. These states are Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia.

Connecticut has produced 37 players in NBA history, with Kris Dunn currently playing in the G League. Cedric Ceballos is the last player from Hawaii to play in the league, while Idaho has not had an active player since 2015 when Luke Ridnour retired.

The last two players from Montana to appear in an NBA game were Adam Morrison and Coby Karl in 2010. Matt Bonner is the only player from New Hampshire, and Mike Miller is the last active player from South Dakota.

Vermont has never produced an NBA player, and the last player from West Virginia was Donte Grantham. Who is Grantham? He played three games for the OKC Thunder in the 2018-19 season and never registered a single stat.
