Inside the Capel Family: Get to Know Jeff and Jason Capel

Basketball runs in the family of former college player and current Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel III. His brother, Jason Capel, also entered the world of coaching and playing at the college level. Jason is currently an assistant coach at Pittsburgh, working under Jeff, the team's head coach.

Jason started his college playing career as a small forward. He played for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He is the only player in the UNC basketball team's history to be a starter in all four years of his college eligibility.

He was crowned as Virginia Mr. Basketball in 1996. Jason enrolled for the 2002 NBA Draft but went undrafted. He received a brief opportunity with the Charlotte Bobcats but never made his NBA debut.

Jason Capel continued to pursue his NBA dream by playing in the D-League for a couple of years before exploring opportunities abroad. He played in Japan, Italy and Serbia before ending his pro-basketball career.

Jason Capel's career as a coach

Jason Capel began his coaching career with Appalachian in 2009 as an assistant under Buzz Peterson. Within a year, he was offered the head coaching job. Capel was Appalachian's 15th head coach. He was at the helm for four seasons and finished with a 53-70 overall record before his contract ran out in 2015.

Capel joined his brother Jeff's staff in Pittsburgh in 2018. The two brothers have led the team to a 67-76 record overall. The current season seems like a different story, though. The Capel brothers have led Pittsburgh to a 16-7 record so far, their best mark at this stage of the season in four years.
