Why did Angel Reese leave Maryland? Real reason behind her switching colleges explored

LSU v Iowa
Angel Reese transferred from Maryland and found greener pastures.

Angel Reese just led LSU to its first ever women’s college basketball national championship. And the star forward has two more years of eligibility left with the Tigers.

Reese, a first-team All-American and the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament, averaged 23.0 points and 15.4 rebounds per game this season. She was the nation’s fifth-leading scorer and second in rebounds. The SEC All-Defensive Team member posted an NCAA record 34 double-doubles.

Reese is the first player to record 100 points, 70 rebounds, 10 blocks and 10 steals in one NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

Reese transferred to LSU this season and was recruited by star coach Kim Mulkey. Reese spent two seasons at Maryland from 2020-22.

Reese played sparingly in her freshman year, totaling just 150 points in 225 minutes in 15 games as Maryland reached the Sweet 16.

In her second year in College Park, Reese emerged as a big contributor. She played starter minutes and scored in double digits in 31 games as a third-team All-American and an All-Big Ten first-team and All-Big Ten Defensive team member. Maryland’s season ended with a loss in the Sweet 16 to No. 1 seed Stanford.

She chose Maryland at first to stay closer to home after growing up outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Both of Reese’s parents played college basketball and professionally in Europe. Her brother, Julian Reese, plays basketball at Maryland. Her cousin Jordan Hawkins just won the national championship on the men’s side with UConn.

Reese left Maryland after the two Sweet 16 losses to try to find a new coach to push her. She chose Mulkey and LSU over South Carolina and Tennessee. Mulkey won three national titles with Baylor before coming to LSU. She is now the first women’s coach to win a title at two different schools. She's also won national titles as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

Reese is not eligible for the 2023 WNBA draft. Players need to be 22 years old or have completed a four-year degree from a university.

Reese is expected to return to LSU next season as the Tigers will be one of the favorites to hang the banner again. Reese often played center position at Maryland, which she never did in high school. At LSU, Mulkey allows her more freedom to roam and create in space.
