The NBA rumor machine has tried to send Steph Curry to the Charlotte Hornets a few times. A story in 2020 broke about the Warriors trying to trade Curry and Klay Thompson back in 2011 before the “Splash Brothers” really broke out, for then Hornet Chris Paul. This would have altered basketball history as we know it.

NBA players like Steph Curry rarely become available. Fans of the Charlotte Hornets once thought lightning would strike in their favor and they could get Curry. There was a lot of speculation in 2017 that the two-time MVP might come to the Hornets via free agency.

The idea of Steph Curry playing in Charlotte comes up frequently since it’s where he grew up. His dad, Dell Curry, played for the Hornets and there is still a family home in Charlotte. There have been players who have wanted to play in their hometowns or close to home before. It’s not uncommon for fan bases to want their local heroes to come home.

Steph Curry sat down with Scott Fowler on “Sports Legends of The Carolinas” podcast and spoke about the idea of playing in Charlotte.

“What would it be like to wear No. 30 in Charlotte, like my pops?” - Steph Curry

It is very unlikely the Warriors will ever trade Curry. He is the cornerstone of the franchise and they have him under contract until 2026. In that year, Steph would be in his 17th season and around 38-years-old. He may decide to continue playing, or he may retire. Will the Warriors decide to rebuild before then? The future could be interesting.

How it all Started for the Steph Curry's father, Dell Curry

In the 1988 expansion draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers left Dell Curry unprotected. Curry was a sharp shooting guard from Virginia Tech. He became one of the original Charlotte Hornets. Curry would go on to play ten seasons for the team.

Dell Curry is known for his ability to shoot from beyond the arc. He mostly came off the bench for the Hornets and was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the year in the 1993-94 season. Curry had his most successful years playing for the Hornets. Curry has three kids: two sons, Steph and Seth Curry, and a daughter, Sydel Curry.

Curry is still involved with the Charlotte Hornets organization; he currently works for them as an announcer. This long relationship makes his family and the fans hope that one day his star son will come home to be part of the Hornet franchise.
