
Billy Napier has been the head coach for the Florida Gators Football Team since 2022. His record with the program stands at 19-19 as of August 2025. Before he joined the Florida Gators, he was the head coach of the University of Louisiana from 2017 to 2021. He had a 40–12 record in four seasons, including three straight seasons with 10 or more wins and two seasons that finished in the AP Poll, both of which were firsts for the university.
Before converting to quarterback at Murray County High School in his birthplace of Chatsworth, Georgia, where he played for his father, who was also his head coach, Napier, who was born in Cookeville, Tennessee, was an exceptional wide receiver. Billy Napier has over two decades of coaching experience. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Clemson Tigers in 2003.
Clemson & SC State
Napier went to Clemson as a graduate assistant after graduating from Furman. In 2004, he was appointed as the quarterback coach at South Carolina State after serving as a general assistant for two years at Clemson. Napier decided to return to Clemson after just one year with SC State, having accepted a position on Tommy Bowden's staff that combined the duties of recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach.
Alabama, Colorado State, Florida State, and Arizona State
Napier worked as an analyst for Saban throughout the 2011 season. For the 2012 season, he went to Colorado State as a quarterback coach and assistant head coach. In 2013, Napier was hired by Jimbo Fisher, who was Florida State's head coach at the time, to serve as the team's recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach.
However, less than a month later, Saban brought him back to Tuscaloosa to replace Mike Groh as the team's wide receiver coach for the 2013 campaign. Todd Graham selected him to be the offensive coordinator at Arizona State following his four-year tenure as Alabama's wide receiver coach, which included a second national championship in January 2016.
Louisiana (2017-2021)
In 2017, Napier became the 26th head coach of the University of Louisiana's football program. Before joining the Florida Gators in 2022, he had a 40-12 record while he was there till 2021.
Florida Gators (2022-Present)
Napier was appointed as the University of Florida's 28th head football coach. As of August 2025, he has a 19-19 record with Florida.
