Jay Norvell is a collegiate football head coach, appointed by the Colorado State Rams on December 6, 2021. Norvell has over 38 years of coaching experience in both, collegiate football and the NFL. He became the 24th head coach and the first Black head coach in Ram's history. Norvell is known for his offensive strategies and led the Nevada Wolf Pack as the head coach for six years. He coached in three Bowl games and won two of them, most famously the Arizona Bowl in 2018. Norvell coached numerous collegiate teams like Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, UCLA, Nebraska, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northern Iowa. He also coached NFL teams like, the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders. Norvell graduated from the University of Iowa in 1985 and was also selected in the All-Big Ten First-team.

Jay Norvell's first season as head coach at Colorado State in 2022 was promising. The Rams ended the season with a 3-9 record. In the second half of the season, they went from scoring 247.3 yards a game to 324.1 yards a game. Defensively, the Rams went from allowing 400.8 yards per game to 309.1 yards per game. For that prosperous season, Norvell’s seven players earned All-Mountain West honors.

During his tenure with the Wolf Pack, he achieved an overall record of 33-26 and led the team to multiple bowl appearances, contributing to the program's resurgence. In December 2021, Norvell was appointed as the head coach of Colorado State University. As of 2024, Norvell's record at Colorado State stands at 16-20. His combined head coaching record across both institutions is 49-46.

Jay Norvell has one younger brother named Aaron Norvell. As per The Oklahoman, Aaron is an actor and producer, known for his roles in films and television series such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Pointless Pleasant (2005-2006), The Last Ride (2004), and Desire (2006). Aaron Norvell was also a collegiate football player at Wisconsin, having played as a linebacker when Jay Norvell was on the staff. Their father also played at Wisconsin. Additionally, Aaron Norvell is a personal trainer in Hermosa Beach.
