Freeze was named the 31st head coach of the Auburn Tigers football team by Auburn University on November 29, 2022. Freeze was a successful high school football coach at Memphis, Tennessee's Briarcrest Christian School, where he coached Greg Hardy and Michael Oher.

After graduating from Senatobia High School in 1988, Freeze played junior college baseball for two years as a lettered player at Northwest Mississippi Community College. The University of Southern Mississippi was Freeze's next school. He earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports administration from Southern Miss in 1992.

For the 2025 season, Auburn Tigers head football coach Hugh Freeze is expected to make $7 million (via The Football Scoop). His six-year deal, which began at $6.5 million in 2023 and includes a yearly rise of $250,000, is the basis for this amount. A $225,000 yearly retention incentive is also part of his contract, and it is given on February 1st of every year. For reaching particular goals, like winning a predetermined number of SEC games, making it to or winning the SEC Championship, and making it to or winning the College Football Playoff, Freeze can also get a variety of performance-based incentives.
