A fearsome hitter of a cricket ball, a six-hitting, clutch knocks behemoth, and a street-start bowler, Andre Russell is your ideal T20 cricketer, if there ever was one, and one of the greatest that the Indian Premier League has ever witnessed. His immaculate ball-striking ability and fiery pace with the ball have earned him a reputation as one of the most feared cricketers to have played in the cash-rich league.

Andre Russell IPL Teams from 2012-24

Andre Russell earned his maiden IPL contract with the Delhi Daredevils (Capitals) in the 2012 auction (INR 2.2 Crores) on the back of his power-hitting exploits for the West Indies.

However, it was in the year 2014 that he received his true calling when he was picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 60 Lakhs. But, just like in 2012 and 2013 where he played just 7 games across two seasons, Russell didn't get much game time. He played just 2 games and scored 2 runs besides taking 1 wicket.

It was in the following season that Russell truly announced himself in the IPL as he went on to smash 326 runs @ 36.22/192.89 besides taking 14 wickets @ 23 apiece. He picked up the 'Player of the Match' award thrice and was eventually adjudged the 'MVP' of the season.

The 2016 season was more about Russell the bowler even as runs didn't flow off his bat as rapidly from his bat. Russell accounted for 15 scalps @ 19.40 and an economy rate of 7.97, which also included his maiden 4-wicket haul (vs PBKS).

Russell missed the 2017 season due to a drug-related ban but he returned in 2018 with vengeance. The next couple of seasons would go on to establish 'Dre Russ’ as the most fearsome T20 powerhitters in the game.

His breathtaking 88* (36) against the Chennai Super Kings, which included just 1 four but 11 gigantic sixes lit up the season and also sent a warning signal to bowlers about what was to ensue.

In 2018, he hammered 384 runs at a strike rate of 184.79 (besides taking 13 wickets), but it was really in 2019 that he truly unleashed himself as the best. Russell's 510 runs (in 13 innings) came at an average of 56.66 and a ridiculous strike rate of 204.81, and it was against the eventual champions, MI, that he was at his absolute best- 80* (40). In addition to the carnage that he inflicted on his opponents with his bat, Russell also bagged 11 scalps @ 26.09. Just as in life, every high is followed by a lull, the same happened with Russell in 2020 as he struggled for form in the Emirates. In 9 innings, the burly West Indian could only manage 117 runs @ 13.

However, Russell ensured that it was just a blip as he was back to doing what he does best in the following two seasons: smashing the ball out of the park at the death & taking out batsmen in the death overs. His 21-ball 50 nearly helped KKR chase down CSK's 220 from an improbable position.

In 2022, the all-rounder scripted history as he became the first bowler to take 4 wickets in an over (vs GT). Russell finished the season with 335 runs @ 37.22/174.88 and 17 wickets @ 16.35. In 2023, Russell had a mediocre season scoring just 227 runs and picking up just 7 wickets and the West Indian would be wishing to turn things around in IPL 2024.
