Shaun Marsh was the first player to win the award. He scored 616 runs in 11 matches which was the most runs scored in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League.
The record of most runs in the IPL season belongs to Virat Kohli who scored 973 in 2016 and got his name in the Orange Cap winners list. He will be one of the contenders to score most runs in IPL 2022 along with the likes of David Warner and KL Rahul. Williamson.
The Orange Cap is a special prize in IPL given to the batter who scores the most number of runs. The Orange Cap race begins after all teams have played one match each.
Owners of Orange Cap change as the season progresses, and the player who has the most runs to his name at the end of the tournament takes the Orange Cap award home.
Every batter dreams to win the Orange Cap in IPL one day, but it is not everyone’s cup of tea to get the Orange Cap. To earn the Orange Cap, a player needs to perform well consistently.

5 Indians have won the Orange Cap in the IPL. They are Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Robin Uthappa (2014), Virat Kohli (2016), KL Rahul (2020) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021).
The benefits of being an Orange Cap holder is that more people know about a player’s talent, especially when the player is uncapped. Orange Cap holders also get to wear a special cap while fielding.
Last year, the winner of the Orange Cap additionally received a prize money of INR 10 lakh.
The only uncapped player to win the Orange Cap in IPL history is Shaun Marsh. He won the award in 2008, scoring 616 runs in 11 innings.
No, Super Over runs are not considered for calculation of Orange Cap.
Many great all-rounders have played in the IPL, but none of them have held the Orange Cap and the Purple Cap simultaneously in the same season.
