Two crucial points will be up for grabs when Punjab Kings (PBKS) lock horns with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 66 of the ongoing IPL 2023. The much-awaited fixture will be played at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Friday, May 19.

Punjab, who have recorded six wins after 13 games and have a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.308, are eighth in the standings. In their last game against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamsala, PBKS were handed a gut-wrenching defeat on Wednesday (May 17).

After being put in to bat first by Shikhar Dhawan, DC rode on a fabulous knock by Rilee Rossouw. The South African hit a magnificent 37-ball 82* and hit six boundaries and as many sixes.

Prithvi Shaw (54 off 38) also made his comeback a memorable one as he smashed his first IPL 2023 fifty, which led DC to 213/2 in the first innings. Sam Curran was the only successful bowler for Punjab, taking 2/36 in his four overs.

PBKS needed a strong start to have any chance in the game. However, the hosts lost Shikhar Dhawan on a golden duck. Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide then added 50 runs for the second wicket.

After Taide and Liam Livingstone added another 78 runs for the third wicket, the former retired himself out for 55 runs at the 15-over mark.

Despite all Shahrukh Khan, Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma failing, Livingstone kept Punjab alive in the contest. The Englishman plummeted DC bowlers to all parts of the ground and remained unbeaten at 94* off only 48 balls. He struck five fours and nine lusty maximums during his stay.

Ishant Sharma defended 32 runs in the last over as Delhi won the game by 15 runs to go ninth on the table.

While RR also suffered a defeat in their previous outing, their loss was a far tarnishing and insulting one. The Rajasthan-based franchise lost their last game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by a comprehensive margin of 112 runs.

After RCB elected to bat first in Jaipur, they got off to a steady start, scoring 50/1 after seven overs. Glenn Maxwell (54) then came out with positive intent and added a partnership of 69 runs with his skipper Faf du Plessis (55).

Rajasthan then clawed their way back into the game by taking four wickets inside just 18 runs. However, Anuj Rawat's cameo of 29* off 11 got RCB to a decent first-innings total of 171/5. Adam Zampa and KM Asif both took two wickets apiece.

Chasing a challenging target, the Royals collapsed to 31-6 in seven overs. It looked like RR would break RCB's record for the lowest team total in IPL history. However, Shimron Hetmyer's 19-ball 35 ensured that the home side crossed the 50-run mark.

Yet, it was truly a shambolic batting display by the hosts while RCB bowlers were excellent in inflicting blows regularly. As many as four RR players registered ducks to their names while four other batters could only get to single-digit scores on the day.

Wayne Parnell's opening spell of 3/10 had RR reeling while Karn Sharma, Michael Bracewell, and Maxwell took five wickets between them. Rajasthan recorded the third-lowest IPL score ever of 59/10.

Their horrendous performance left Rajasthan behind in the qualifying race.
