Sanju Samson's decade-long IPL career thus far has been one of immense joy, but yet it feels like he could have done a lot more, given the immense talent at his disposal.

Samson had started turning eyebrows in the fall of 2010, as a teenage prodigy from Kerala, by plundering big scores in domestic cricket. An IPL call-up was just a matter of time, and it came calling in 2012 when the Kolkata Knight Riders signed him up for INR 8 Lakhs.

Sanju did not get a game at KKR, but his life soon turned for the better a year later, when the Rajasthan Royals picked him up for INR 10 Lakhs. This proved to be a game-changer for Samson, and he milked it to the hilt, with his sublime stroke play whetting the appetite of fans and pundits alike.

During the season, Samson became the youngest to score a half-century following his audacious 63 off 41 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He was duly awarded the 'Emerging Player of the Year' prize, and an IPL star was born!

He backed it up with a 300+ season in 2014, but the following two seasons revealed Sanju's consistency issues, which would go on to become a feature of his career in years to follow. Samson managed just 204 & 291 runs in 2015 & 2016, with his strike rate taking a major beating (112.35) in the latter.

With Rajasthan Royals getting banned for a couple of seasons, Sanju plied his trade with the Delhi Daredevils.

In 2017, the right-handed batter scored his maiden IPL ton- a whirlwind unbeaten 102 off 63- which made him the 2nd youngest to achieve the milestone at that time.

Samson returned to RR in 2018, and he celebrated his homecoming by smashing 400+ runs in a season- 441 runs @ 31.5/137.81- for the first time in his career.

He continued to be the face of the Royals in the following two seasons, even as the performance of the team pummelled alarmingly.

Sanju started the 2020 season with a couple of match-winning knocks, but he once again struggled to back it up as the season progressed.

The Kerala cricketer was named captain of the franchise ahead of the 2021 season, and while he did not have the best of starts in his debut season as skipper, Samson returned with a vengeance in 2022, leading the franchise to its first final appearance since 2008. He also struck 458 runs @ a strike rate of 146.79 in IPL 2022.

In the 2023 IPL, Sanju scored 362 runs at a strike rate of 153.39, but the lack of consistency is something he'll look to work on in the upcoming campaign (IPL 2024).
