Smoldering Ember can only be found in the realm of Muspelheim. God of War (2018), like most modern fantasy games, necessitates resource materials to craft specific armor pieces, which may then provide the gamer with enchantment sockets, ability bonuses, and associable stats. Smoldering Ember is one such required resource for crafting and upgrading armor pieces, but finding this rare resource in specific may be difficult, especially since it is only accessible in Muspelheim.

How to get to Muspelheim in God of War

Kratos must first unlock Muspelheim to discover and collect the Smoldering Embers in God of War. To do so, you must collect four of the seven possible Cipher pieces. They can be discovered in chests throughout the world.

  • Passage from Lake of Nine to Foothills.

  • Cliffs of the Raven.

  • Forgotten Caverns.

  • Witch's Cave.

  • The Mountain Summit at Mystic Gateway.

  • Alfheim.

  • Muspelheim Tower.

When Kratos finds four Ciphers, he is given the Muspelheim Travel Rune, which allows him to enter the Muspelheim realm from Tyr's Temple.

When inside Muspelheim, the only way to obtain Smoldering Embers is to finish combat trials of varying difficulty. There are six trial arenas in total, though some of them are quite difficult, so players may struggle to complete them. Furthermore, each has two different challenges, one on normal difficulty and one on hard difficulty, with the final one being a Valkyrie fight.

  • Muspelheim Trial 1 – Normal: 3 minutes to kill 15 enemies, Difficult: Three waves of enemies that will keep respawning if there are any left alive.

  • Muspelheim Trial 2 – Normal: Stay alive for five minutes, Difficult: Same but with enemies that heal instantly, making them very hard to kill.

  • Muspelheim Trial 3 – Normal: 1 elite enemy that is invulnerable while his allies are alive, Difficult: Same but kills only count inside special circles that move around with a timer.

  • Muspelheim Trial 4 – Normal: Kill 100 enemies, Difficult: Kill enemies and don’t let anything capture Atreus.

  • Muspelheim Trial 5 – Normal: Defeat all enemies in the allotted time with a 1-minute timer that keeps reducing but killing enemies adds 20 seconds to a maximum time limit of 1 minute 30 seconds, Difficult: Take out 20 enemies while avoiding taking a single hit of damage from any source.

  • Muspelheim Trial 6 – Defeat the Valkyrie

Each of these trials grants Kratos several Smoldering Embers, and once all six trials (normal and hard except for the Valkyrie one) are completed, Surtr's Hidden Trials are unlocked. The only difference is that, unlike the original six trials, Surtr's Hidden Trials can be repeated multiple times for a substantial number of Smoldering Embers.

How to use Smoldering Ember to upgrade Kratos’ equipment
