Leishman was born in Victoria's Warrnambool. He enjoyed a very fruitful amateur career in Australia, taking home numerous junior tournament victories. He played in the same group as his father when he was 13 and won the Warrnambool Club Championship. He was the Victorian Boys Champion and the winner of the South Australian and Victorian Junior Masters in 2001.

In 2005, he went professional. In 2006, he participated in the Von Nida Tour, where he finished first in the order of merit and won two tournaments. He participated in his first Nationwide Tour season in 2007, ranking 92nd on the money list.

At the 2008 WNB Golf Classic, he equaled the record by eleven strokes, tied with Chris Smith, to win his first championship on the Nationwide Tour. He earned a PGA Tour card for the 2009 season by placing 19th on the money list.

Leishman triumphed at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans in April 2021. He was partnered with Cameron Smith, a fellow countryman. They triumphed over Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel in a playoff. In the men's competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were held in July–August 2021, Leishman participated and placed 51st.

Leishman joined LIV Golf; it was revealed in August 2022.
