At the age of 15, he claimed the title of Junior Mexican National Boxing Champion in Tuxtla Gutiérrez in 2005. Alvarez concluded his amateur career with a record of 44 wins and 2 losses, including 12 knockouts. Alvarez later made his professional debut in the same year.

Canelo Alvarez Nickname

Canelo, meaning cinnamon in Spanish, is a nickname for people with red hair, a trait often associated in Mexico with Irish soldiers who fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Canelo Álvarez, the boxer, has acknowledged the possibility of having Irish ancestry in his family history. He was nicknamed "Jícama con Chile" by his neighbors, referencing a popular Mexican snack, likely due to his heritage and possibly his red hair. Alvarez was given the alias by his trainer Jose Reynoso due to his red hair.
