Israel Adesanya faced Sean Strickland in a middleweight title showdown at UFC 293 on September 10, 2023. He was originally scheduled to fight and defend the middleweight gold against Dricus du Plessis, who was the leading contender for the title at the time, however, an injury forced him to withdraw, which led Adesanya to call out Sean Strickland as a replacement for Du Plessis. Strickland delivered an upset and put up a strong game on the feet, outclassing Adesanya by a unanimous decision and becoming the new champion of the middleweight division.
