Cooper Rush contract: How much will Cowboys QB earn to back up Dak Prescott?

Dallas Cowboys v New York Giants
Cooper Rush of the Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys backup QB Cooper Rush recently signed a two-year contract worth $6 million to continue his career in Dallas.

The contract also includes $2.75 million in guaranteed money for 2023 to ensure that Rush remains with America's team. Cooper Rush will occupy his customary role as the backup to Cowboys' shot caller, Dak Prescott, as the franchise wrap up their off-season dealings.

Rush started five games in place of an injured Prescott last season, going 4-1. Dallas won their first four games under Rush, thanks to a defense that allowed fewer than 17 points per contest.

Thanks to the four-game win streak following his first start in 2021, the 29-year-old became the fourth QB in the Super Bowl era to win his first five career starts, with his team scoring 20-plus points in each game.

How much has Cooper Rush earned in his NFL career?

Cooper Rush has earned $3,999,429 during his NFL career, where he has been a backup for some of the league's finest shot callers. Coming in an undrafted free agent in 2017, Rush was given his first shot in the NFL by the Cowboys. He signed a three-year, $1,670,000 entry-level contract with the Cowboys and became a squad player.

Rush left the Cowboys when his contract was up, as he sought greener pastures. He found a new home in New York and signed a short-term contract with the New York Giants worth $186,000 over two seasons.

He didn't play a single snap for the Giants, eventually finding himself at the Cowboys again. He has been with the Cowboys since 2020, signing numerous prove-it deals, spending almost a decade as the second (or third) option with America's team.

How has Cooper Rush performed as Dak Prescott's backup in Dallas?

Cooper Rush has performed admirably as Dak Prescott's backup in Dallas, with the Central Michigan University alum providing a decent safety blanket for the Cowboys. It's a known fact that Prescott isn't the most durable QB in the league, so the Cowboys need a super reliable backup who can jump in at short notice.

Rush has been that guy, and you don't have to look further than earlier this season when he stepped up in place of Prescott. Rush appeared in nine games in the 2022 NFL season, putting up a stat line of 1,051 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.

Those are decent numbers for a QB with less than 20 NFL appearances. Rush's Cowboys record reads 1,475 passing yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions in 16 games over five seasons.
