How much cap space do Buffalo Bills have? Assessing Bills' spending power

Denver Broncos v Buffalo Bills
Buffalo Bills are one of the best teams in the AFC.

The Buffalo Bills are one of the best teams in the AFC and have been a regular postseason threat for the last few years.

The Bills are constructing a roster that could take them a step further than their divisional round game loss in 2023. They have $9,801,293 in cap space ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. That's enough for them to go into the 2023 NFL season without cutting any player on their roster.

The Bills have six picks in the 2023 draft and will need to sign all the players they draft on rookie-scale contracts. They have a first-round draft pick with the 27th overall pick, and what they pay him will cause a cap hit of $2,513,800.

Their second-round selection will generate a cap impact of $1,122,832, and their third will amass a hit of $955,742. The fourth-rounder will bring an $894,340 hit, the fifth $844,624, and the sixth will constitute a $749,872. Hence, following the draft, the Bills will be left with $2.7 million in cap space.

Three Notable Free Agents Buffalo Bills signed this off-season

Here are three free agents the Buffalo Bills added to their already stellar roster:

#1 Damien Harris, RB

Former New England Patriots running back Damien Harris leaves New England for Buffalo and joins a certified contender for the next Super Bowl.

Harris replaces Devin Singletary, the team's leading rusher in the last four seasons. Harris is a bigger back (5' 11", 213 pounds) to pair with smaller rushers James Cook and Nyheim Hines.

He's someone who could have success in short-yardage situations (averaged 4.0 yards per carry on third down and in short-yardage cases, ranked 15th among running backs in 2022) and take advantage of light boxes.

Harris adds a different skill set to the room and is someone the Bills have seen be successful firsthand — he ran for over 100 yards in three of his five games against Buffalo. Let's see how the Damien Harris experience works in Buffalo.

#2 Jordan Poyer, Safety

The rumours are over, and Jordan Poyer is returning to a franchise he loves so much, as the Buffalo Bills agreed a two-year deal.

Before free agency, Poyer had expressed his excitement about exploring the market, but clearly, the 2021 first-team All-Pro did not find the offers he was looking for. Poyer, who turns 32 in April, returns to fill a big hole at safety for the Bills opposite Hyde, whom he has started alongside since 2017.

While the Bills still need to add depth at the position, a critical defensive starter is returning, and the Bills only lost one game with him on the field last year (13-1). Now that he's back, it's time to run it around and go one better.

#3 David Edwards, G

There's an advantage of loading up on the offensive line position in the NFL, and clearly, the Buffalo Bills got the message.

The beaten AFC Divisional Round franchise signed guard David Edwards on a one-year contract in the off-season. Edwards spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with current Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer on the Rams, which brings some familiarity. He's a Super Bowl winner and will add experience to a Bills' locker room largely devoid of true leaders.

Edwards has familiarity. The 2019 fifth-round pick has started 45 games and has postseason experience, including Super Bowl LVI, with most snaps coming at left guard. He has also played right guard and at least one snap at the other line positions. The 26-year-old will compete for the interior offensive line roster spots.
