It appears that the Washington Commanders will soon be up for sale. Although it has been a long time coming, many were surprised that Dan and Tanya Snyder were even taking the steps to move forward with the process.

While names of potential buyers of the NFL franchise immediately flooded social media, it is still unclear who is serious enough and wealthy enough to make such a lucrative purchase.

Byron Allen, a philanthropist and businessman who works in media, was one of the names that was mentioned as being a potential buyer. In February of this year, he was a part of a group that placed a bid to buy the Denver Broncos. He is apparently going to try to make his second bid for an NFL team this year.

In response to his potential interest, some on Twitter came up with their own: Mackenzie Scott. She is the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and is currently one of the richest women in the world. Scott, a novelist, has been known to share her wealth in recent years through various philanthropic ventures.

How much are the Washington Commanders worth?

Daniel Snyder purchased the Washington Commanders in 1999 for $800 million. Now, in 2022, it appears that Snyder is ready to sell as he has hired Bank of America Securities to handle any potential financial transactions. This indicates that the sale is going to happen sooner rather than later.

According to Forbes, the Washington Commanders' estimated value is $5.6 billion and has an operating income at around $130 million. This valuation ranks the Commanders as the sixth highest-valued NFL franchise in the league.

Is Jeff Bezos buying the Commanders?

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has expressed interest in buying an NFL team in the past. He was said to be interested in the Denver Broncos before Rob Walton, heir to the Walmart fortune, bought the team.

Bezos was sitting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as the first "Thursday Night Football" game on Prime Video was broadcast in Kansas City earlier this season. The billion-dollar partnership between the NFL and Prime Video was a big step forward for the streaming service and the league.

Bezos also lives in the Washington D.C. area and already owns the Washington Post, so he's already familiar with the city. He is currently worth $140 billion and could easily afford the $6 billion NFL franchise if he wanted to.

But whether he would want to, or be allowed to own the television rights to Thursday night games as well as an NFL franchise, is something that would need to be discussed before anything else.
