Russell Wilson gets new backup quarterback

Denver Broncos' new head coach Sean Payton has assembled a new coaching staff and will look to turn things around next season. While getting Russell Wilson back to the type of quarterback he once was with the Seattle Seahawks is the main priority, there may be a backup plan.

The Broncos announced on Monday that they had signed quarterback Jarrett Stidham as a backup. Stidham has signed a two-year deal worth $10 million, which is quite lucrative for a quarterback who has only started two games in his NFL career.

Stidham was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. He was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The 26-year-old started the last two games of the 2022 NFL season for the Raiders when the team decided to sit Derek Carr.

In those two starts, he had a 63.9% completion rate and threw for 656 yards and four touchdowns. The Raiders reportedly considered naming Stidham as their starter for 2023, but decided otherwise. The Denver Broncos declined former backup quarterback Brett Rypien’s unrestricted free agent option as well.
