According to Jim Trotter, the NFL could be considering a change to their playoff programming. With broadcasting deals growing and the television aspect of sports booming, Rorger Goodell could very well be looking into something unprecedented.

Trotter, a former ESPN reporter, revealed this exclusively to Sportskeeda's Ballfather podcast and said:

“The NFL from the owner standpoint is all about revenue and so I wasn't surprised to see them take a playoff game, and create, you know, to use it to drive more revenue and the Wall Street Journal reported that it could be in the neighborhood of $110 million for this one game. So, they're touting it as the first time that a streaming service will have exclusive rights to a playoff game wildcard game, the primetime game on Saturday night."

He continued:

"The NFL is very good at sending out trial balloons or doing test runs and I view this as a test run for them really a no lose because they're gonna get $110 million, even if the game were to bomb. But if it does, well, which we know it wil, now they're driving up their broadcast rights fees again, and the revenue just keeps growing and growing and growing.”

According to Trotter, Peacock, the popular streaming service, may have access to a playoff game. Streaming services have agreements with other sports, for example, Apple TV and Amazon Prime both stream MLB games.

NFL looking into unprecedented change

However, this would be rather unprecedented in that a playoff game has never been on a streaming platform exclusively. This would likely be very lucrative for the NFL and that's a big reason they're looking into it.

Additionally, this could change sports television forever. If this proves to be a successful partnership, other streaming services will come looking for their own agreements. MLB's deal with Amazon and Apple could alter to include playoff games.

While there's no guarantee that this is done or that it's successful, it looks as if Roger Goodell and company are in the business of growing their business and changing the game along the way.
