The Dallas Cowboys have woken from their free agency slumber as they have traded for Indianapolis Colts cornerback Stephon Gilmore. In a trade that sees Dallas give up virtually nothing, Dan Quinn's unit gets stronger at the cornerback position.

Per Tom Pelissero, the Cowboys acquired Gilmore in a trade that sees Dallas part with a 2023 compensationary fifth-round pick in what is a great move for the Cowboys.

Needing to make a splash in free agency, Dallas has done just that and didn't break the bank to do it either.

The star cornerback has one year left on his current deal that sees him paid $7.9 million and has a roster bonus due in May. It is a superb piece of business for Dallas.

While many thought the Cowboys were eyeing offensive talent like Odell Beckham Jr. or DeAndre Hopkins, the first move is to pair Trevon Diggs with a star corner on the other side of the field.

Quinn's unit was one of the best in the NFL and now adding Gilmore, it shores up what was at times last year a shaky position opposite Diggs.

But by adding Gilmore, who does have some injury history, Dallas has fortified its defense and it is essentially a risk-free move as Gilmore has a $2m cap hit.

The Dallas Cowboys last year often had one side of the field locked down defensively with Trevon Diggs, but the other side is where teams attacked.

The likes of Nashon Wright and Kelvin Joseph both tried their hands starting for Quinn's unit and while they showed a bit of promise, for the most part it was underwhemling.

Now with Stephon Gilmore added, the tandem between him and Diggs promises to be a fierce one for the Cowboys. The Pro Bowl cornerback is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys in a move that will surely excite the fanbase.

After a superb year for the Indianapolis Colts, the cornerback is now in Frisco and will be looking to be a key part of the Cowboys defense.

With this move secured, the Cowboys can now go about their business of either trying to sign their own in Leighton Vander Esch or even going after a free agent in Hopkins and Beckham Jr.

But after being quiet in free agency, the Cowboys have made a splash in signing Stephon Gilmore.
